Turtle Lake Refuge
Mission Statement
photo of Katrina Blair in the Turtle Lake garden courtesy of the Durango Herald Our mission is to celebrate the connection between personal health and wild lands. We manifest this goal through promoting and practicing sustainable practices. A few examples of our work include growing and preparing local, wild and living food for the community, driving a vegetable oil-run vehicle, utilizing solar dehydrators, using a bicycle powered blender and wheatgrass juicer and educating about the great value of wild foods and wild lands in the school systems.

Durango Farmer's Market

This summer is our seventh season at the Durango's Farmer's Market. We provide living food treats such as sunflower greens, pea greens, sun dried bread, flax crackers, granola bars, and other delicious creations. We also offer bicycle-powered wheatgrass juice and bicycle-blended wild fruit smoothies. We pedal all of our wares on two three wheel bicycles down to the market place.

The Farmer's Market is open every Saturday from 8:00 am until 12:00 pm from early June until Mid October. It is located at the First National Bank Parking Lot on 8th St. and Camino del Rio. For more information about the market call Sue Breckner at 970-259-3123.

Greenhouses
In addition to our growroom at Turtle Lake Refuge, we are currently growing produce in 3 greenhouses located in different locations around Durango. We produce a large percentage of the salad greens for the "Local Wild Life" lunches. We also grow tomatoes, basil, parsley, cucumbers and other vegetables. Our hope is to grow enough excess year round so that we can help significantly increase the availability of locally grown produce within our community. greenhouse
